New York, NY, January 11, 2024 — Steven B. Zelin, CPA, Managing Member of Zelin & Associates CPA LLC in New York City and The Singing CPA®, advises taxpayers that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will start accepting tax returns for the 2023 tax season on Monday, January 29, 2024. The deadline for filing is Monday, April 15, 2024.  “This start date for individual tax return filers allows the IRS time to perform annual updates that are critical to ensuring IRS systems run smoothly.”

Mr. Zelin noted filing electronically with direct deposit information is important. He stressed individuals can speed tax filing by having all necessary records available, such as W-2s, 1099s, receipts, canceled checks and other documents that support an item of income, or a deduction or credit.   “Tax credits and deductions change the amount of a person’s tax bill or refund. People should understand which credits and deductions they can claim and the records they need to show their eligibility,” he added.

He cautioned taxpayers about responding to phone calls or automated messages from someone who claims to be from the IRS. “The IRS will not call you by telephone or send an email requesting money,” he said.
